It’s that time of year where everyone is planning their weddings for the summer, so I thought I would make a post about saving $$$ on diy invitations. My husband and I got married the summer of 2014 and we were able to keep our ENTIRE wedding at under $5000.00! It was definitely hard to do and not everyone can keep it this cheap, as we were very lucky to be able to borrow and make a lot of the wedding pieces/services. I’ll start off with giving you some tips on wedding invitations. Invitations can cost a pretty penny if you plan on hiring a professional to make them for you, so I am going to show you how you can make them for less than 1/2 the price AND if you put the effort into the creativity of them, they can look really amazing. So, to start… here’s our wedding invitations that I designed, printed and put together myself…
Tip #1-Try and limit your guest list to less than 50 people, or if you can’t, you should send as many Facebook invites as possible, because your little fingers will be exhausted after putting together each one of these bad boys. Photoshop would be the best program to design your invitations, but if you don’t have access to this program, you could do them in Word….you’ll just be limited for fonts.
No. 1 Start off by finding some thicker cardstock paper. I got mine for free from work, but you could find some at the dollar store or you could buy bundles of different thickness cardstock from Micheals (with a coupon of course) or you might find cheaper deals online.
No. 2 Find or buy envelopes (standard #10 would probably be the cheapest) and design your invitations around the envelope size.
No. 3 Fold or cut your invitations to fit into your envelopes. You can fold cardstock many different ways, for starters like mine, with a three fold.
Tip #2: To fold your paper; so that it does not rip or bend, take a ruler and a butter knife. You’ll want to crease the fold in your paper with your butter knife. (you can see the difference in these two photos)
No. 4 Design your wording in Photoshop or in Word. If you’re having a hard time starting, click the links below to give you an idea on where/how to start….here’s two designs that are both done in word
No. 5 Once you have designed your invitations, go to your local printing shop and have one printed. You should start off with one, to make sure you made everything to size.
No. 6 Now, it’s time to make your invitation fancy! Depending on the theme of your wedding, you should purchase some fabric such as lace or burlap (which was in my case). Be careful not to spend too much and try to look for deals. I purchased my burlap from Uline.ca and although it was the cheapest stuff I could find, it wasn’t the best to work with. But, it was rustic and that’s what I was going for.
Tip #3 If you decide to buy unfinished burlap, use packing tape on the back when working in small pieces. This will prevent it from unravelling and (if using it for your invitations) it’ll slide on and off nicely. This is your time to get crafty with ribbon, lace, mesh, jewels, stickers…the list goes on. Visit Pinterest for some ideas if having a hard time with creativity.
No. 7 Once you have your prototype, it’s time to get everything printed and cut out. This is the time to send out a Facebook invite to your bridesmaids for an “Invitation Get Together, Put Together” (I am sure you can come up with a better name than mine) Lol
No. 8 You should purchase labels from Staples or a stationary warehouse and print address labels in word with a template such as Avery which are very easy to download online. Or, if you have neat writing, save some money and write each address on the envelopes!
Well I think that’s it! Wedding invitations are a lot of work to put together if doing it by yourself, but remember it’ll be well worth it when you can tell your family members that YOU made them all by yourself.
